The ground floor of this eccentric summerhouse was originally built in 1761 in an orthodox classical style as a garden retreat and hothouse for the 4th Earl of Dunmore. The Pineapple was then added in 1777 after Lord Dunmore's return from serving as Governor of Virginia. It is one of the oldest examples of the fashion for architectural flights of fancy and perhaps the most spectacular use of a fruit in architecture! The four plain and unassuming rooms of the pavilion are available to book throughout the year with prices varying greatly according to the month of the year. For example, the building can be rented for 4 days in January (Mon-Thurs) for £213 or for 3 days (Fri-Sun) it is £314. A 3 day weekend stay in July or August would be £925. Contact the Landmark Trust to find out more. 6.5 hectares of gardens open to the public.
